Don't worry people, its not the end of Mr Mum, although there is only 1 week left of school and therefore proper Mr Mum will be hanging his marigolds up soon... no, today was a far sadder affair, it was the end of an era for Megs - she is leaving year 2 at school and due to start senior school in September. Therefore, we had their "leavers assembly" today, but more of that later.
With Jo off from work today, there were more hands to help get everyone ready before school, Jo then took Megs and Emma to school while I contemplated breakfast.
Jo came back from school with Rosie to announce Bob was missing (not again I thought, I was only just recovering from the last episode - see previous blog for more details). Emma had made it to school without Bob - this is a first for all concerned, but unfortunately hadn't gone unnoticed with Emma who almost exploded when she realised Bob wasn't with her. This then meant a trip back to school for Mr Mum with bob propped under my arm, I got a few funny looks as I walked through the school with Bob, but we were soon re-united with Emma and normal service was resumed.
I then rushed home to pick Rosie up for Toddlers Group. Thursday mornings is Toddlers with M and M (no not the rapper) in a village hall up the road. The kids had a lovely time running inside and out with their toys, they even had story time and cake, so they were well pleased. The adults got a coffee and biscuit so cant complain.
At the point when the kids started to become a little bored and therefore annoying, we decided to leave and come home. We said goodbye to M and M and came home for lunch. It was then a quick power nap for Rosie before heading back to school for the Leavers assembly.
Its the same old thing every year - a scrummage of mammoth proportions by the parents barging their way into the school hall to get the perfect view of their little angels. The queue to get in stretched for miles, anyone would think Take That were about to perform with all the excitement in the queue.
We made it into the hall and managed to wangle a seat in the second row in the middle, perfect viewing for the show! The kids entered the hall in their classes and quietly sat down in front of us. Let the show begin!
We were warned before hand there might not be a dry eye in the house, and this became reality when the little treasures sang their "leavers song", everyone was reaching for either a tissue or their camera. The amount of electronics in the room was immense! at least one camera or video camera per parent, so you can imagine the scene, it was like how a press conference with Robbie Williams would be after he finally admits he is gay!!!
Anyway, after the first emotional song of the day and with sniffs and nose blowing echoing around the hall, it was time for Mr Mum to get involved - in my other official role, I am a Parent Governor with the school. This title doesn't come with many nice extras but today it did. I got to go on stage and hand over the "End of year certificates" to each and every little person in the year! I was joined by two other Governors and we shared the responsibility of shaking them all by the hand and wishing them well for Junior school. Some of them hadn't quite mastered a hand shake, so instead we settled for a "high five" or simply an exchange of words! That was my highlight of the show, and I even got to hand over the certificate to Megan so I was chuffed!
Anyway, after that the musical began, the kids had now changed into their costumes and were ready for "Eddie the Penguin", a tail of a group of penguins travelling the world expressing their anger at pollution and how the world was being destroyed, asking for people to re-cycle. Megan was a narrator so helped explain the story to us. The show went extremely well and was a brilliant performance.
At the end the kids went back to class to get their stuff, leaving the parents to gather outside of the classrooms.....there was a deathly hush of anticipation in the air......not because the parents wanted to see their kids, but the rumour was that the kids were about to give us a letter detailing which class and which teacher they would be getting in Junior School............THIS IS BIG NEWS PEOPLE! So when the door opened and the kids came running out, the usual niceties and greetings were thrown out the window, it was simply a case of getting their bags off them and hunting down the letters! There was then a silence as the letters were read by all concerned, this was promptly followed by chaos!
"Who have you got?" "Whos in 3V class?" "Whats this teacher like?" "where can I get a stiff drink?" were all typical questions that were bellowed around the playground for the next 15 minutes.
We finally managed to get out of there and home. For the record Megan has a very nice teacher called Mrs V and has a few of her pals in the same class so everyone is happy.
By the time we got home it was tea time, shower time, book time, bed time..........a very busy day all round including a Leavers Assembly that wont be forgotten quickly by the parents or the kids or in fact the teachers.
Our little babies are growing up, and growing up fast....Where have all the years gone?!?!?
I bid you farewell Mumsters around the globe and give your kids a special hug tonight.
