A sad moment in the chapter of Mr Mum, the last official day as Mr Mum. I will continue but it wont be on a daily basis as I have to head back to an office and start bread winning again.
The day started well, with the sun shining again, so took Megs to school - she only had a half day today as it is the Easter break, so it was non school uniform day, they were even allowed to take a teddy bear in and then watch a movie - alright for some!
Arrived at school, and the gang gathered to discussed each others clothes and teddy bears - blimey, how are old are they? they suddenly care what they are wearing and what their peers are wearing - when did that start??!?!
Dropped Megs off, then we went back home to get ready for lunch (E was coming round) and the Mumsters picnic this afternoon.
E came round for lunch and we enjoyed an hour in the garden before having to head back to school for 1.30 to pick the kids up. We had a quick scoot around and then it was off to the park.
The park is next to the school and I have never seen it so busy - it was absolutely packed with Mumsters doing the same as us. We managed to find a little corner which became base camp, laid out the picnic blankets and sent the kids off to play. happy days.....
There was a good group of us - T,D, A, K, E, R,H, S, K, B, K, S, N, N to name but a few! (most of them are the kids by the way). I had managed to bring a refreshment buggy with it which contains some nice Pimms (with all the trimmings), white wine and blackcurrent for the kids, we also had crisps and G&T contributions from the others. So we sat back and got stuck in to the Pimms.
An eventful 4 hours in the park, and as this is the last formal blog, I felt it best I dont take the mickey out of anyone in particular or point out any peculiar behaviour.
Therefore, I wont mention a certain mumsters losing her rag with her son and calling him a "muppet", which I think the whole park heard, or there is the vibrating fence incident, and then there was the Mumster telling off the 11 year olds for pushing her daughter - I wont mention that!
Heres one for all the dads out there - When asked to guess the age of a woman, what do you do? you cant win whatever you say - but sadly, this is what Mr Mum was asked today in the park. I was bullied into giving an answer so I plumped for a fair age of 33. Now, you would have thought I had just told them I was blowing up the world or something - the uproar this caused sent ripples around the park....so much so that I thought I must have made serious error in my age guessing. My name was mud at this point, so I simply asked how old she was, expecting her to say 20 or something.....but no, how old was she? she was 30 - I WAS 3 YEARS OUT, which in my book isnt bad! So all you dads out there, if ever asked this question, do not answer it - run away!
Anyway, we left the park at 5ish to come home for tea. When home, Emma decided to be sick all over the sofa - a nive mixture of strawberries and blackcurrent drink - ideal on a light coloured sofa!
As its my last blog, I just wanted to send out a few thanks to everyone who has helped me stumble through the last 5.5 weeks. Firstly, there is B - thanks for the cakes and the coffee mornings, really appreciate it. Then there is M for the toddler mornings and E for being a helpful Mumster, joining the PAB meets and for putting up with me! All the other Mumsters at the school -thank you for allowing me into the inner circle for these weeks, its ok Jo will be back soon!
Penultimately, there is T - what can I say - thanks T, you have been great to me, I really appreciate it and for putting up with my endless questions and mickey taking!
Finally, the biggest thanks goes to my kids and wife for allowing me the pleasure of being Mr Mum for the last few weeks. I have really enjoyed it.
Its been emotional, sure we've had our ups and downs, and heck, yes sometimes I wish I had been at
work, but when you see the kids run over smiling at pick up time, it makes everything else not matter. I just explained to Megs and Emma that mummy will be taking over again and I asked what they liked about having daddy around - Megs said "buying me ice cream" and Emma said "making her lunch" -?!?!? and then Emma said "I'll miss you daddy".......and that made it all worthwhile.
Last Mr Mum Top tip
Dont take "the wife" for granted:
The number one top tip is not to take your wife for granted, looking after kids isnt easy and should never be looked on as the "easy role".
Over the last 5 weeks, I have found a whole level of respect for all the mums out there, getting kids ready, taking them to school in the cold and rain and making sure they get through the day undamaged is a thankless task and my hat goes off to every single one of the Mumsters who do this day in day out.
Kids are great, but can be challenging and sometimes extremely frustrating, but make the most of every day, because before you know it, your kids will have all grown up and will no longer want their mummy when they hurt themselves, or their hair combed in the morning.
Its been fun along the way and will miss it when I am back in a stuffy office 5 days a week. God bless all the Mumsters out there - without you I would have been nothing!
The blog will continue in some shape or form, but probably not on a daily basis so keep your eye on it.
see you again soon.....
4 stars out of 5 for this one, especially the credit to J part and the "miss you daddy".
ReplyDeleteBUT one demerit on the age catastrophe. 30 is NOT and never will be 33, take it from your little cuz that is__I can't say it.
I...am...there...this...year, (whew! That was a WAY too grown-up moment) I would love to be 30 FOREVER!
Then again, I said that about 25 also!
Great job, and thanks for the funny reading!
